R. Mitchel "Mitch" Metcal

Forensic Engineer

Dr. R. Mitchel "Mitch" Metcalf joined MRA Forensic Sciences in September 2025, bringing an exceptional blend of academic achievement, engineering expertise, and biomechanical knowledge. He earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah, where his doctoral research in the Utah Head Trauma Laboratory focused on the biomechanics of infant skull fractures. His groundbreaking work quantified the material properties and fracture behavior of infant skulls, enabling more accurate prediction of fracture patterns in cases of suspected child abuse. As part of this research, Mitch designed and fabricated specialized testing apparatuses and developed proprietary computational models to simulate and predict fracture propagation.

Before joining MRA, Mitch worked at Stryker Neurovascular, where he advanced from engineering intern to Production and R&D Engineer I. In that role, he contributed to the development, testing, and refinement of advanced neurovascular guidewires used in lifesaving medical procedures. Complementing his engineering background, Mitch is also a comprehensively certified Pilates instructor, combining a deep understanding of human movement and anatomy with engineering principles.

At MRA, Mitch applies his specialized expertise in biomechanics, solid mechanics, and engineering analysis to accident reconstruction and injury causation investigations. He has quickly developed a particular interest in motorcycle-related collisions and continues to expand his expertise in this area. Mitch is also a strong advocate for leveraging Python programming and automated analytical workflows to improve efficiency, consistency, and technical rigor throughout the investigative process.

Outside of his forensic work, Mitch is passionate about health, fitness, and the outdoors. He enjoys running, Pilates, and calisthenics and embraces the classic Utah lifestyle as an avid rock climber, mountain biker, and skier. His greatest passions, however, are found on the water, where he enjoys both water skiing and scuba diving. A dedicated motorcycle enthusiast, he can often be found riding his Triumph Speed Triple through Utah’s scenic mountain roads. Above all, Mitch values time spent with his wife and young son, who proudly serves as the true head of the household.
